Performance and Efficiency: The Focus for Hino 500 Series Standard Cab

Improved performance, operational efficiency and reduced emissions are the key benefits offered by the all-new Hino 500 Series Standard Cab range.

Powering the new Hino 500 Series Standard Cab model range is a new heavy-duty A05 five litre four-cylinder diesel engine.

Powering the new model range is a new heavy-duty A05 five litre four-cylinder diesel engine which delivers superior torque, increased power, reduced fuel consumption with the cleanest exhaust emissions ever on a Hino product in Australia.

The A05 is a derivative of the larger A09 six cylinder heavy duty engine fitted to the 700 series heavy duty models in Japan and the heavy duty 500 Series Wide Cab models in Australia.

“A variant of the A09 also powers the Hino Dakar Rally team’s “Little Monster’’ race truck,” said Daniel Petrovski, Hino Australia’s Manager of Product Strategy.

As a derivative, the A05 has been designed with the same heavy duty philosophy in mind and the commonality in components between the A05 and A09 confirms the family lineage.

The new engine has three power ratings which are dependent on the model selected - the FC 1124 and FD 1124 models receive the A05-TE engine, which delivers 240hp at 2300RPM and 794Nm of torque at 1,400RPM.

FE 1424 crew models receive the A05-TD with 240hp at 2300RPM and 833Nm at 1,400RPM.

“The range-topping FD 1126 and FE 1426 models receive the top performance engine in the A05C-TC, which produces peak power of 260hp at 2300RPM and a very healthy torque rating of 882Nm at 1400RPM.

“The high torque output and the low revving nature of this engine is further evidence of its heavy duty genes - while reducing RPM improves the fuel efficiency it also reduces stress on the engine and ultimately improves reliability and durability.

“The new A05 engine produces as much torque as the larger J08 engine in the 500 Series Wide Cab models, and has 10 to 20% more torque than the J07 engine in the outgoing Standard Cab vehicles.

“The A05 delivers its torque across a lower and wider RPM range, and delivers improved drivability and unbelievable hill-climbing performance,” continued Mr Petrovski.

“The increased torque ratings and wider torque range allows the new engine to be driven comfortably at lower RPMS than the previous engine, reducing engine noise and fuel consumption.

“This is a heavy duty engine that we have been able to fit into a medium duty truck and as a result the driving performance of the new models is the best yet from a medium duty Hino truck.”

Auxiliary braking is courtesy of a new Hino engine retarder brake.

“Better known as a Jacobs Engine Brake® or Jake brake, this truck will be the first Japanese medium duty truck below 15 tonne GVM in Australia fitted with a true engine brake.

“Combined with a traditional exhaust brake, the downhill descent control is class leading and is sure to set a new bench mark.

"The A05 can also be specified with a 343Nm live drive PTO driven at 100% engine speed. Suitable for all types of applications requiring engine dependant drive and is sure to make its mark in applications such as mixers and vacuum trucks,” said Mr Petrovski.

Reduced emissions are another benefit of the all-new A05 engine.

“The all-new 500 Series Standard Cab is the cleanest Japanese medium duty truck in Australia, and meets Japan’s stringent post-Post New Long Term (pPNLT) emissions standards, which is basically the Japanese equivalent of the European Euro 6 emissions standards.

“Our customers want the best performance available but they also want this performance delivered in the most environmentally responsible way. This has led Hino to deliver what is planned to be our ADR80/04 solution, even before the Australian Government has finalised when the next emissions ADR will be required.” said Mr Petrovski.

Hino now offers an expanded choice of transmission options for the 500 Series Standard Cab models.

For drivers who prefer to use a clutch pedal and shift gears themselves, the Hino LX06 and MX06 six-speed manual gearboxes are fitted as standard to the FC and FD models, while the FE model is fitted with the new MX07 seven-speed manual gearbox, which offers more operational versatility and one more gear than its rivals.

“The LX transmission is proven in the outgoing 500 Series Standard Cab and we have added the new range of MX transmissions to support the increased torque of the A05 engine.

FD and FE customers also have the option of a Hino Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), in the MX06 six and MX07 seven speed options respectively.

The Hino AMT is a manual transmission with the gear selection and clutch operation controlled by the vehicle, which reduces driver fatigue as the truck is responsible for the clutch and gear selection.

Unique to the Hino AMT transmissions, a shift dial gear selector on the dashboard for R, N and D selection is complemented with a shift lever on the steering column. This is used to switch the transmission mode between auto and manual as well as manually select gears.

“A six speed Allison 2500 Series full automatic transmission is available across the range of 500 Series Standard Cabs – this means Hino is the only Japanese manufacturer to offer a true automatic transmission from the car licence 300 Series Standard Cab models right through to the 500 Series Wide Cab FM 2632 320hp 6x4 Bogie drive model.”

“This is a unique offering in the Australian marketplace– the benefits of a true two pedal automatic transmission over an AMT in the smaller trucks include an easier slow speed manoeuvring and full power shifts with no loss of power.

“The driver can spend more of their concentration on getting the vehicle to and from its destination with reduced fatigue and improved safety.”

All Standard Cab FD & FE Manual and AMT transmission variants are fitted with the Hino Stop Start System, automatically stopping and restarting the engine when the vehicle is stopped.

The Hino 500 Series Standard Cab is now available at Hino dealerships nationwide with further information also available at hino.com.au.
